Embattled British home secretary Charles Clarke is facing demands to appear in the Commons tomorrow to update MPs on the progress of a massive operation to track down more than 1,000 foreign criminals.

The Tories called for an urgent progress report on attempts to track down 1,023 offenders released from prison without being considered for deportation and arrest 79 of the most dangerous.

"They refuse to answer those questions and it's not good enough for Charles to say some time this week, perhaps after the local elections are over or some such thing, I'll come back and tell you.

"I want to see an urgent statement in the House of Commons tomorrow so the public can know that these people who are putting them at risk are being brought in and where appropriate, I think most cases, deported."
