Next week's Accenture World Match Play championship in California is set to feature 2000 champion Darren Clarke against England's up-and-coming superstar Justin Rose.

Clarke beat Tiger Woods in the final three years ago to claim the $1 million first prize, but did not defend the title in Australia the following season and last February, back at La Costa, was knocked out in the first round by American Matt Gogel at the second extra hole.

Rose, still only 22, will be making his debut in the championship which brings together the top 64 players in the world.

Actually, it looks like being 64 of the top 65 this time because Japan's Toru Taniguchi, ranked 55th, has not played recently after the discovery of a non-cancerous tumour in a leg.

His expected non-appearance would bring in 65th-ranked Robert Karlsson for an opening tussle with number one Tiger Woods, who returned to action in sensational fashion by running away with the Buick Invitational - his first event since knee surgery in December.

Former Ryder Cup partners Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie are also due to meet in the first round.

The match play draw takes place next Monday, but as things stand, assuming Taniguchi does not play, ninth seed Padraig Harrington would open against German Alex Cejka, Paul Casey would take on fifth seed Retief Goosen and Nick Faldo would meet Jim Furyk in a rerun of his last Ryder Cup match at Valderrama in 1997, which the American won three and two.
