Down minor Martin Clarke looks set to follow in the footsteps of Tadhg Kennelly and Setanta Ó hAilpín and make the switch to Australian Rules Football.

The 18-year-old All-Ireland winner is understood to have agreed a deal with Melbourne club Collingwood having impressed in a series of trials over the summer.

Clarke will become the latest gaelic footballer to join the AFL as Australian clubs continue their recruitment drive targetting Irish players.

Earlier this week, Meath minor Shane O'Rourke turned down an opportunity to the Brisbane Lions.  O'Rourke's outstanding performances in this year's under-18 International Rules test series in Australia also sparked interest from Collingwood and Carlton.

Kennelly and Ó hAilpín have enjoyed mixed fortunes since their moves to Australia with the Kerryman a key member of the Sydney Swans championship winning side while former hurling All Star Ó hAilpín has struggled to make an impact at the Carlton Blues.

Laois footballer Colm Begley, another recent convert to try his luck at the professional code, is thought to be close to making his senior debut with the Brisbane Lions.
