Indonesian police have arrested Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir as a terror suspect as he left jail after serving time for lesser charges.
His supporters hurled rocks and firebombs at police as he was rearrested.
Bashir, accused head of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah network, was released today after 18 months in prison for immigration offences but was served with an arrest warrant and detained as he left the jail in central Jakarta.
Police had said earlier they would rearrest him over allegations he had violated various anti-terrorism statutes. Under Indonesian law he could be held for up to six months for questioning and investigation before formal charges are laid.
Police had questioned the frail cleric earlier this week regarding the October 2002 bomb blasts in Bali that killed 202 people, and had said they would arrest him on suspicion of violating anti-terror laws.
Allegations against him include terror conspiracy, plotting attacks and the role of Jemaah Islamiah in terror cases.
His rearrest will likely further enrage his militant supporters and anger Muslim leaders and politicians who accuse authorities of bowing to US pressure over Bashir's case.
Hundreds of his supporters clashed with police before dawn near the prison in Jakarta before a smiling Bashir was taken.
