THE STORMONT department of health said yesterday it did not collate statistics relating to misdiagnoses of ultrasound scans of expectant mothers in Northern Ireland.

Around 5,000 women suffer miscarriages annually in the North and the majority of these are managed by early pregnancy clinics.Under Royal College guidelines women suspected of carrying a foetus which has died are always offered a second scan, particularly if there is any doubt.

It is also understood that women who have had a miscarriage are increasingly being encouraged to miscarry naturally rather than opt for a DC procedure.
