Former US president Bill Clinton will be back on the operating table today to undergo heart surgery for the second time in six months.

The operation to remove fluid and scar tissue from his lung is a rare but low-risk complication arising from his heart-bypass surgery last September.

Just hours before he was due in hospital, Mr Clinton played golf at a charity event for tsunami victims and said he was not concerned about the impending surgery.

"I've had an unusual life," he said. "If something happens, if I get struck by lightning on the golf course, I'd wind up ahead of 99.99 per cent of the people that ever lived.

"I'm just grateful for every day when the sun comes up. But it is not a dangerous procedure, unless something totally unpredictable happens."

Mr Clinton (58) joked about being a better golfer than Mr Bush, as the pair toured the course, 100 miles north of Miami.

He gave him a handicap of a few strokes but questioned whether that was fair seeing as Mr Bush went skydiving for his 80th birthday.
