Washington - President Clinton yesterday paid his respects to the widow of former White House counsel, Charles Ruff, who died on Sunday and who had defended Mr Clinton during his impeachment proceedings and secured his acquittal by the Senate in February 1999.

Mr Ruff died of an apparent heart attack while at his home, Mr Clinton aides said.

Mr Clinton visited Mr Ruff's home and spoke with his widow, Sue. With him were the White House counsel, Ms Beth Nolan, deputy counsel, Mr Bruce Lindsey and White House Chief of Staff, Mr John Podesta. Many disabled Americans embraced Mr Ruff, who had used a wheelchair since he was paralysed as a young man, as a role model during the impeachment trial.
