GLENDALE, Calif - President Clinton yesterday paid tribute to his election rival, Senator Bob Dole, who retired from the US Senate yesterday after a long congressional career. Mr Clinton, addressing a large group of young people in California, urged the crowd to applaud the veteran senator.
Meanwhile in Washington, Republican right wingers vowed to fight Mr Dole's conciliatory new gesture towards abortion rights advocates and said his move, which caused a furore on Monday, could provoke a bruising battle at the Republican convention.
