John Curran  of St Brigid's Crescent, Bagenalstown, was a passenger in a car that struck a wall near Borris, at around 11pm last night.

The driver of the car was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny. His injuries are not thought to be serious.

The total number of people killed in road crashes this weekend now stands at six. Five people died in a two-car collision in Donegal on Saturday night.

Speaking in Galway today, Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney described the crashes in Donegal and Carlow as "an absolute tragedy".

She added: "We have lost 63 lives already on our roads this year. That's more than ten lives a week and this is a huge tragedy for those people and their families."
