The Irish Marine Emergency Service's coastal units have been alerted after more than 100 tonnes of tar balls washed up on the west coast of England and the Isle of Man. The balls, ranging in size from golf balls to footballs, were discovered early yesterday. The Minister for the Marine, Mr Michael Woods, said an air surveillance aircraft had scoured the Irish coastline and had not seen any of the balls. The source of the pollution is not known.
