Cold Specks, Crawdaddy stage, Friday:
Those who've already found their way to Canadian singer-songwriter Al Spx's I Predict A Graceful Expulsion debut album will have had this appearance marked in yellow highlighter from the time she first appeared on the line-up.
And you can bet that her fanclub will have increased significantly after this smart, subtle and magnificently low-key showcase for her voice and those songs. Her band too added to the melancholic, slow-motion elegance of the occasion, knowing that simple lines rather than broad brushtrokes were what this sound required.
But it¹s the black-clad, sombre Spx you return to again and again. That voice is a serious instrument, mighty, rough-around-the-edges and soulful in every way. Early-doors Picnic-goers who were here will testify to what you missed.
Verdict: ****
