"We have now sifted though all the rubble and there are no bodies," he said.

"We have finished the search and the local authorities are now preparing to shore up what remains of the building."

Yesterday, a couple with a baby girl who were among those rescued from the rubble were taken to North Middlesex Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

The operation was suspended at 2.35am today after 30 rescuers had spent 18 hours searching through the debris. The rescue resumed at 9am today.

The building, made up of five flats above the Star off-licence and White Hart Lane Newsagents, collapsed soon after 8am yesterday, according to police.

A firm of builders had been knocking down a wall separating the two ground-floor shops, which were both closed for business, to make them into one property. They had planning permission from Haringey Council.
