A MEDICAL Council hearing was told yesterday that an anaesthetist was so concerned about the behaviour of a gynaecologist that he went to a colleague for advice.

Dr Abdelaly Abeidi was concerned about an operation planned by Dr Andrea Hermann on a mother of two at the Galway Clinic.

The case, heard in Galway, is one of seven complaints under investigation by the council involving patients under Dr Hermann’s care between 2005 and 2008.

Dr Hermann has admitted professional misconduct in her care of mother of two Saundra O’Connor (39), Claregalway, Co Galway, who died following a day procedure at the Galway Clinic in 2005.

In a case involving another 39-year-old mother of two, consultant anaesthetist Dr Brian Harte told a hearing of the council’s fitness to practise committee he was approached by Dr Abeidi in March 2008 concerning Dr Hermann’s care of the woman, who had Factor 11 deficiency, a bleeding disease.

Consultant gynaecologist Dr Geraldine Gaffney said the patient was admitted to Galway University Hospital 12 days after the abdominal hysterectomy at the clinic.

She received clotting factor replacement and was discharged after 19 days. The hearing resumes next month.
