A grant of £6 million for the development of a new complex in Tralee Regional Technical College has been criticised by Fianna Fail TD, Mr Batt O'Keeffe, who said the money should have been used for expansion in the Cork region.

Mr O'Keeffe said that Cork RTC had recorded the highest number of first-preference applicants under the CAO system for 1996 and was "crying out for additional places to be made available". Yet it had received only £3.75 million.

A spokesman for the Department of Education said the building programme in Tralee RTC was part of a programme announced in January 1994, based on assessments of needs in colleges around the State.
