THE Neil Jordan film, Michael Collins, last night was set to become the all-time box-office champion at Irish cinemas, writes Michael Dwyer.
Before cinemas opened yesterday, Michael Collins was just short of the record figure of £3,122,000 set by Spielberg's Jurassic Park in 1993. Warner Bros, the distributor of Michael Collins, was confident that it would break the record by close of business last night.
The Jordan film has been attracting consistently strong business across the country since it opened on November 8th, and it is credited with bringing back to the cinema people who had not been in one for decades. The film was nominated for two Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles on Thursday, Liam Neeson as best dramatic actor and Elliot Goldenthal for best original music score.
