The new location for the members of the so-called "Colombia Three", who were moved from Bogota at the weekend, is now known to be a high-security prison at Combita, three hours' journey from the Colombian capital.

Mr James Monaghan (56), Mr Martin McCauley (40) and Mr Niall Connolly (36) were arrested in August 2001 and charged with training FARC rebels in bomb-making and with using false passports. They were moved from La Modelo prison on Sunday but their new location was unknown until yesterday.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the three men had been moved to Combita, and said the Department was monitoring the situation.

It is understood that defence lawyers were given the details yesterday when they contacted INPEC, the state prison authority. The defence team may lodge an appeal with the Colombian supreme court to have their clients transferred back to Bogota.

Ms Caitriona Ruane of the Bring Them Home Campaign said a senior Colombian justice official had assured a visiting Irish delegation on November 29th that the three would be kept in Bogota and would not be separated.

"We are calling on the Irish Government to make representations to the Colombian authorities to immediately move the men back to a jail in Bogota," Ms Ruane added.
