Astronomy Ireland is organising a telescopic viewing of the Hale Bopp comet and the Russian space ship Mir in the Phoenix Park tonight and tomorrow at 9 p.m.

Astronomy Ireland, which will provide astronomical telescopes for the occasion, says the comet is now at its best as it blazes past the Sun.

"The Russian space station Mir has returned to our night sky and makes for a stunning spectacle," says Astronomy Ireland.

"The crescent moon will provide a beautiful backdrop to these cosmic events while ensuring perfect viewing conditions. The planet Mars will also blaze overhead."
