Labour's former Northern Ireland shadow secretary, Mr Kevin McNamara, who tabled the motion, said it was deplorable there had been no adequate answers to claims her life had been threatened by RUC officers.

The move comes on the second anniversary of the loyalist bomb attack outside her home in Lurgan, Co Armagh. Nobody has been charged with the murder.

The SDLP has been pressing British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair for an inquiry before the party agrees to sign up to new policing arrangements.

But Mr McNamara insisted today: "The government cannot trade off this overdue investigation in negotiations with political parties. It needs to act unilaterally."
