Concern gets £1.2m to aid Bangladesh victims

Concern has received its largest donation for a specific programme, a £1

Concern has received its largest donation for a specific programme, a £1.2 million contribution from the German government aid agency, to the relief agency's work with the victims of flooding in Bangladesh, writes Paul Cullen.

ECHO, the EU's humanitarian office, has contributed a further £230,000.

However, the agency is unhappy that the Department of Foreign Affairs has not yet responded to its request for support. Concern says it applied to the Department for aid "a number of weeks ago".

Ms Breda Gahan of Concern's policy unit said the Government's support was urgently needed in Bangladesh, where the agency has been working for nearly 30 years.

Almost two-thirds of the country had been devastated in the recent floods, and 35 million people need to be re-housed.

A spokesman for the Department said it had allocated £100,000 to the UN's general appeal for Bangladesh in September. Henceforth, it was concentrating on rehabilitation rather than emergency aid.
