Eleven people were killed in an ambush in a rebel-held area of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bukavu radio, monitored in Nairobi, reported today.
The radio, controlled by a Congo rebel group, said the nine men and two women were killed by Rwandan Hutu militia on a road in the north of Sud-Kivu Province on Friday. Five people survived the attack, it added.
Former members of the Rwandan army, who fled into the Congo after the fall of the Rwandan Hutu government in 1994, are active in the area.
The Rwandan Hutu militia have been blamed for numerous attacks on Congo rebel forces and on civilians in parts of the eastern Congo which are controlled by rebels opposed to the Kinshasa government.
