Consistent poverty fell 50 per cent in Ireland between 1994 and 1998, the latest report released today by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) said.
The report, Monitoring Poverty Trends and Exploring Poverty Dynamics in Ireland, factors in the ERSI measure of poverty, which is based on both income and depravation factors such as lack of heating or clothing.
The study was one of four reports launched today by the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs, Mr Ahern, at the Gresham Hotel.
The Minister also said the EU National Action Plan against Poverty 2001-2003 came at a critical time in the development of social inclusion policy in Ireland.
He also complimented a Equality Authority report for its emphasis on access issues and highlighted their attempts to assist public sector customer service to reflect the principles of equality and diversity.
The new annual report of the National Anti-Poverty Strategy Inter-Departmental Policy was also launched by the Minister. He said NAPS will have a crucial role to play in shaping future social inclusion policy.
"The National Anti-Poverty Strategy is the key Government mechanism for building a society where every individual and community has the opportunity and incentive to participate fully in the economic and social life of this country," he said.
