Me & my money

Alan Quinlan

Are you a saver or a spender?

Definitely more of a saver now – but in the early days of my career I was more of a spender.

Do you shop around for better value?

Sometimes – it would probably depend on what I’m in the market for. For higher-ticket items I would shop around, I wouldn’t really bounce around the place for smaller items.

What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?

My first pair of Adidas rugby boots . . . I think they were 50 old Irish pounds.

What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?

My first car . . . the solid as a rock Volkswagen Jetta.

Have you ever crossed the Border to shop?

No, it isn’t something that I would usually do. I prefer to shop locally if at all possible.

Do you haggle over prices?

I’d be a shy enough person, so haggling wouldn’t really be in my nature. So, only if I think there’s a need.

Has the recession changed your spending habits?

Definitely – I’m certainly more price-conscious, but sure we probably all are now.

Do you invest in shares?

No, I never have. To be honest, as my two prior qualifications are mechanic and professional rugby player, I’d be cautious in that area.

Cash or card?

Both, but I’ve often stung my fellow team-mates over the years by pretending I had neither.

What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?

A new Taylor Made driver – straight as an arrow off the tee – definitely good value for money.

Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?

Yes, my house in Limerick. I’m a Tipperary man at heart, but I do feel very comfortable in this home.

Have you ever lost money?

Yes . . . the odd dodgy investment.

Are you a gambler and if so have you ever had a big win?

Not really, but I enjoy going to the races now and again.

Is money important to you?

Not as much as my health and that of my family.

Best money saving tip you’ve ever heard?

Save a few bob for a rainy day. My father always preaches that.

How much money do you have on you now?

€25 . . . I had more, but lost €20 on the golf course this morning.
