Thumbs Up/People power: The power of consumer rage was clearly demonstrated last week when the Dundrum Town Centre was forced to abandon the ridiculous fees associated with its gift cards after a brief but exceptionally effective e-mail campaign.

An e-mail which highlighted the card's €3 monthly fee started doing the rounds at the beginning of last week and within hours, it seemed, everyone was forwarding it to everyone else. Within three days the Dundrum centre had been forced to issue a statement announcing that following negotiations with the card's operators HQGiftFlex, the recurring €3 fee had been dropped.

If only the centre acted more swiftly when PriceWatch contacted it on behalf of an angry reader to complain about the issue in early September it might have been spared last week's embarrassment. Still, at least the centre did respond to the campaign and scrapped the charge ahead of the Christmas rush.

Hot to be cool

Almost a third of young men admit buying hot dishes they don't like just to impress their pals, according to a poll published by Domino's Pizza. The survey reveals that the male competitive streak even extends to their diet at the risk of numb lips and scorched palates. It found 30 per cent of men aged 18 to 34 ordered pizzas and curries loaded with chillies to show off, despite not liking the food. Half of those heat-seekers said they go to any length to prove their point, forcing down every last mouthful rather than admit defeat. Meanwhile, only 6 per cent of women said they have ordered hot food to make an impression.

One rotten Apple

A batch of Video Apple iPods has been infected with a software virus, the company has warned. The technology giant said less than 1 per cent of the devices on sale after September 12th were affected. While the virus did not damage data on Windows machines it could lower an infected PC's security settings. The virus spreads via mass storage devices such as external hard drives, digital cameras with removable media and USB flash drives. It only affects Windows.
