Thumbs Up/Bag a bargain: Your bargain Gucci handbag bought from a street hawker in Rome for a tenner could end up costing you a lot more than you thought, the European Consumer Centre in Dublin has warned.
The ECC issued a reminder to holidaymakers travelling to Italy that the Italian government is fining people who buy fake goods there and attempt to bring them out of the country. The fines, which range from €3,000 to €10,000, are levied under Italian legislation in an effort to combat counterfeiting.
Call-in-one service
BT Ireland has launched an "all-in" communications deal offering subscribers line rental, broadband (1MB) and all landline calls to local, national and UK destinations for a total of €45 a month (including VAT). BT's "Broadband & Total Talk" is available to new and existing customers. Customers who switch from other operators will not have to change their phone number, BT says.
Magic numbers
SIMchronise, a Dublin-based company, has developed a service to reduce the stress and hassle associated with losing your mobile or, more precisely, losing all the contact details in your phone's memory. The service, phonebackup.ie, synchronises the numbers on your phone with your secure online account. The service is wireless and requires no other devices or software programmes. It is free until the end of August, after which it will be available for a yearly subscription of 17.99.
Thumbs Down
Say, salty cheese
Dairylea Light cheese slices are saltier than the Atlantic, a campaign group has said. A Consensus Action on Salt survey of 175 cheeses found Kraft Dairylea Light cheese slices contained 2.8g of salt per 100g compared to 2.5g of salt per 100g of Atlantic sea water. A Kraft spokesman said Dairylea salt content was clearly labelled on product packs and as "a responsible company" Kraft had "made a major commitment to salt reduction and achieved significant progress in recent years".
