Protesters sow dissent:A group of protesters in the UK vehemently opposed to a trial of genetically modified (GM) potatoes due to begin on a farm outside Hull last week came up with a novel way of disrupting it.
About 250 supporters of anti-GM food group Mutatoes.org descended on the field early on Tuesday and sowed the entire 16 hectares with organic potatoes in an effort to invalidate the whole deal - fields that have been planted with non-GM potatoes can't then be used for GM trial purposes.
It sounds like a great form of direct action - gentle, effective, witty and you get organic potatoes at the end of it all!
The protesters were no doubt delighted with themselves, until they realised that they had sown the wrong field. Apparently, they had to act quickly and in their haste got a bit lost.
The protesters have since apologised to the bemused farmer, who had his non-GM bean crop unexpectedly replaced.

The website has been re-branded to align it more closely with ComReg's excellent phone and broadband pricing comparison website, www.callcosts.ie.
The re-launched service carries more detailed information on consumer-related telecommunications issues, including roaming charges, broadband and tips on how to stop intrusive and incredibly irritating marketing calls.
