ME MY MONEY:Conrad Gallagher, chef
1. Are you a saver or a spender?
Most of my twenties and early thirties, I was definitely a bit of a spendaholic but now that I am older and a little wiser, I am inclined to save where I can.
2. Do you shop around for better value?
Definitely! Quality is very important to me. The more I can marry quality to better value, I would shop till I drop.
3. What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?
A few sports cars over the years when I was young and foolish – that was probably in excess of €50,000.
4. What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?
My Mini Cooper.
5. Have you ever crossed the Border to shop?
Growing up in Donegal, yes of course, but I was out of Ireland for much of the past few years when it became a particular issue. At the moment most of my time is spent in the restaurant, so it’s not even something I’ve been able to consider.
6. Do you haggle over prices?
Yes, definitely, I’m always pushing to get the best prices. Our sector is so cost-conscious at the moment.
7. Has the recession changed your spending habits?
In my line of business, I have been in and out of recession for years.
8. Do you invest in shares?
No, I don’t. I have bought some in the past but was always unlucky.
9. Cash or card?
Always cash.
10. What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?
The last thing I bought was three old copper pots from an antique store for €11. After a few hours of polishing, they were like brand new.
11. Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?
Yes, I saved up for a cooker one time, which was my dream cooker for my restaurant, and it was a great feeling of achievement. It cost €45,000.
12. Have you ever lost money?
Yes, often. Sadly, I have lost more than I’ve ever made. But I hope I’m learning. I have never lost money at preparing food, though, so I’m sticking to what I know best.
13. Are you a gambler and, if so, have you ever had a big win?
No, the only gamble I ever had is my addiction to the restaurant business.
14. Is money important to you?
Not really, as long as I have enough to put a roof over my head, send my children to school and can drink a nice bottle of wine on a Sunday, I’m pretty content.
15. How much money do you have on you now?
€36
