The fine art of pubs

When is a pub not a pub? When it’s an Italian cafe

When is a pub not a pub? When it’s an Italian cafe. For some time now, Dublin’s Bernard Shaw pub on South Richmond Street has been offering early morning coffee served through the window on to the street to busy commuters, but it is now also doing tasty arrosticini (lamb on skewers) as well as the thickest, most sinful hot chocolate you can get without actually going to Sicily. Drop in after 2pm and you’ll find a glass of wine on offer as well. The arrosticini are served until 3.30pm.

“Grazie,” I said to chef Leandro Virgilio after lingering over a cup of his deadly chocolate. “Fáilte,” he replied. I’ll be back for more.
