Cork edge out Galway in gripping contest

Cork 1-10 Galway 1-9

Cork 1-10 Galway 1-9

Cork mounted a creditable second half comeback to beat Galway by a point in Division 1A of the National Football League in Pairc Ui Rinn tonight.

It was Galway, however, who adjusted quickest to the atrocious underfoot conditions and they found the net, through sharp-shooter Michael Meehan after 22 minutes.

That goal put Galway three points to the good (1-2 to 0-2) during a low scoring first half but Cork full forward Michael O'Cronin soon settled the home side with a couple of scores just before the break.

Galway led by one point (1-3 to 0-5) at half-time.

After the break, O'Cronin and corner forward James O'Shea combined to point Cork into a two point lead. But that advantage would soon disappear as Galway regained their confidence and turned the screw.

Matthew Clancy leveled the game on 51 minutes, Derek Savage pointed the Connacht men into the lead a minute later while Clancy stretched the lead further on 54 minutes.

Cork were staring defeat in the face with six minutes to play. Galway had improved their lead to three points and were looking good for their first league victory on the road this season.

But then Cork struck. Substitute Conor McCarthy gained possession inside Galway territory and went marauding up field. His shot at the posts looked destined for a white flag but the ball dipped wickedly and crept under the bar for a goal. The sides were level with minutes to play.

O'Shea pointed in the 69th minute to gift Cork a one point lead while Galway spurned an injury-time chance to force the draw when a Matthew Clancy effort drifted narrowly wide.
