A Cork city family was yesterday celebrating the birth of quadruplets with the mother and two boys and two girls all reportedly doing well at the Erinville hospital.
The two boys, weighing 1.64kg (3lb 9.9oz) and 1.85kg (4lb 1.2oz) and two girls, both weighing 1.60kg (3lb 8.5oz) were delivered by Caesarean section between 9.14am and 9.16am yesterday.
The family is from the Douglas area and yesterday the aunt of the babies said the family wanted some time before going public on their good news "They may give interviews and allow photos in due course but they don't want any publicity at the moment," she said.
A Health Services Executive spokeswoman said the family has yet to decide on names for the babies. Erinville maternity hospital manager Nora Geary said: "We've had 18 medical people in total involved, 10 doctors varying from neonatologists to obstetricians and anaesthetists as well as eight midwives."
Consultant obstetrician Dr John Coulter said the preparation at the Erinville for the birth of the quads began several weeks ago. No details were given at what stage of gestation the babies were born though a hospital spokesperson confirmed they were in the neonatal intensive care unit.
