Cork City 1 Shelbourne 0
Shelbourne slumped to their first league defeat of the season this afternoon as Cork City stole all three points at Turner’s Cross.
Colin Patrick O’Brien’s excellent header with just seven minutes remaining proved enough for Cork who inflicted another dent to Shelbourne’s title aspirations. O’Brien, on the pitch as a first-half substitute, rose to steer Alan Carey’s cross home, beating Steve Williams in the Shelbourne goal.
Cork, who registered only their first win of the season last weekend, seem to enjoy playing Dermot Keely’s men. Last year, the Leesiders shocked Shels with a final day defeat at Tolka Park, a loss that cost the Drumcondra side the league championship.
Today’s win, while not quite as important, will have hurt Keely just as much and he will feel his side deserved at least a share of the spoils. Cork rarely threatened in the first half and had Davy Byrne converted either of the two chances that fell his way, the outcome could have been completely different.
Cork improved in the second-half, but failed to carve any clear cut chances before O’Brien struck at the heart of the Shels defence. The result leaves Shelbourne in third while Cork climb a place to 9th.
