A 19-year-old Cork man who appeared at a special sitting of Cork District Court last night was charged with one count of murder and one of assault causing harm.
Mr Peter Whelan, of Ashgrove, Underwood, Rochestown Road, Cork, was charged that on April 27th at Rochestown Road he murdered Ms Nicola Sweeney (19) and assaulted Ms Sinead O'Leary (19), causing harm to her.
He was remanded in custody and will appear at the same court today.
The defendant arrived in the court under garda escort.
Det Garda John Riordan gave evidence of charging the defendant with murder at 6.39 a.m. yesterday morning at Togher Garda station. Whelan replied "No, no" to both charges when asked if he had anything to say.
The court granted an application for legal aid and for the provision of psychiatric assessment for the defendant.
