A Cork man has appeared at Ennis District Court charged with the murder of a father of one in Cork city almost three years ago.

Cecil Lynch (26), St Declan's Road, Gurranebraher, Cork, was charged yesterday with the murder of John Butler (20) on October 7th, 2002, on Gurranebraher Road. Mr Butler died at Cork University Hospital after suffering a single gunshot wound to the chest.

During a two-minute hearing, Det Sgt Denis Cahill told the court that he arrested Mr Lynch at 5.40am at Shannon airport yesterday. He had been deported from the US for breaches of immigration law.

He told Judge Joseph Mangan that he conveyed Mr Lynch to Shannon Garda station, where he charged him at 6.22am with the murder of Mr Butler. In response to being cautioned, Mr Lynch made no response.

A solicitor for the accused, Donal Daly, applied for legal aid. Det Sgt Cahill said Mr Lynch was unemployed having just returned from the US. Judge Mangan granted legal aid.

Insp Tom Kennedy of Ennis Garda station told Judge Mangan that the case was not suitable for bail. The inspector applied that Mr Lynch be remanded in custody to appear again before Cork City District Court next Tuesday.

Judge Mangan remanded Mr Lynch in custody to reappear before the Cork court on Tuesday.
