A Cork man who raped the two teenage sisters of his former girlfriend has been jailed for 13 years.
Trevor Casey (31), Closes Road, Fairhill was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in February on eight charges involving four counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault on dates in 2003 and 2004 at three Cork addresses.
Casey had leaded not guilty to 14 charges at the start of his trial. The jury failed to reach a decision on three of the counts and acquitted him on three others, two of these by direction of Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy.
The jury reached its verdicts on day-seven of the trial after over eight hours of deliberation and having spent two nights in a hotel.
The victims and their family said they wanted Casey named in media reports of the case. Both victims gave evidence that he raped them after they awoke to find him in their beds.
The court heard the younger victim, who is now 18, has been admitted into psychiatric care on occasions as a result of being abused. On one occasion she was raped the day before her Junior Certificate began.
Her sister, now aged 20, gave evidence that during the time of the time of the abuse she began cutting herself and lost weight drastically.
Casey said in evidence during the trial that he never had any sexual relationship with either girl and described as "sick" an allegation that he abused one of them while his son slept in the same room.
Mr Justice McCarthy jailed Casey for a total of 14 years, with the final year suspended. He also directed that Casey's name be added to the register of sex offenders.
