He is believed to have left Ireland eight years ago, living in The Netherlands and Spain initially, before setting up permanent residence in Portugal last January.

Mr Ahern spent much of his adult life in Churchfield on the northside of Cork city and was associated with one of the city's most powerful drug gangs before setting up his own drugs operation.

He had been sought in connection with a serious drugs matter and a vicious assault.
