A teenager remains critical after collapsing in the grounds of a school at an athletics event.
The second year pupil was rushed to Cork University Hospital yesterday when he lost consciousness just moments after taking part in an activity at the CBS in Midleton.
A PE teacher and first aid specialist at the scene used a defibrillator machine on the youngster and carried out resuscitation until he was escorted to hospital.
A spokesman for the Health Service Executive said the teenager remains in a critical but stable condition.
The youngster, said to be 14 or 15 years, is a pupil at Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Dunmanway.
No one at the school would comment this afternoon. Some 500 pupils from more than 20 schools were taking part in the sports day, staged by South Munster Schools Athletics.
CBS principal Denis Ring said the boy had just finished an event when he collapsed.
"A professional first aid practitioner hired in for the day who had a defibrillator and the PE teacher from the boy's school carried out resuscitation together," he said.
"It was very grim for a while. The most up to date information we have is that he is stable, so hopefully he will be okay."
