Water supplies have been restored to most parts of the southwest of Cork city following repairs to a water main in Ballincollig.

The 30-year-old pipe ruptured shortly after 6pm yesterday disrupting supplies to approximately 40,000 people living in Ballincollig town, Carrigrohane, Ballinora, Waterfall, Curraheen, Bandon Road and Bishopstown.

Cork County Council manager Martin Riordan said today supplies have now been restored to most areas, albeit with a reduced pressure. Houses on high ground are being supplied by water tankers, he said.

Power supplies to the region were also interrupted between 7am and 9am as repairs were being carried out.

The pipe provides water from Inniscarra waterworks. Supplies to other areas served by Inniscarra, including the Ringaskiddy industrial zones, were not affected.

Mr Riordan said full service should be restored within 24-hours when the repairs were completed.

The council has urged all consumers, including those in areas not affected by the break, to use water sparingly until normal supply is restored.
