THE Dublin City Coroner yesterday called for new protective measures to be installed for the public along a half mile stretch of the Royal Canal bank following the drowning of 11 people there last year.

Dr Brian Farrell told relatives of two men drowned in the latest tragedy that he would contact Dublin Corporation to ask it to make safe the dangerous section of canal bank stretching from Binns Bridge to Glengarriff Parade at the rear of Mountjoy prison.

Sgt James Judge told the Coroner's Court that nine other people had been drowned over a few months as a result of accidents along the half mile section.

The inquest was told Mr Patrick Jarvis (35), single, of Abbottstown Drive, Finglas, Dublin, accidentally slipped into the canal and was drowned with his companion, Mr Michael Foynes (36), of Upper Gloucester Place, Dublin, who had attempted to rescue him in the canal on June 15th last.
