Pádraig NallySection 25 (4) of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 provides that a court "shall cause the verdict of the jury to be taken in such a way that, where the verdict is one of not guilty, it shall not be indicated whether the verdict was unanimous or by a majority".
The verdict in the Pádraig Nally case was delivered in accordance with this provision. To suggest or publish, as occurred in yesterday's Irish Times, that the verdict might have been other than unanimous was erroneous.
We wish to correct the record and regret any inadvertent breach of Section 25 (4) of the 1984 Act.
