Leading Irish band The Corrs last night received the award for best international act at the Brit Awards ceremony in London. The Dundalk band have sold millions of copies of their latest album, Talk On Corners, and their recent hits include Dreams and What Can I Do.
British singer Robbie Williams won three awards - best British male artist, best video, and best single for Angels.
Apart from Williams's success, other multiple winners were Manic Street Preachers, who won best British group and best album, and Natalie Imbruglia, who won awards for best international female as well as best international newcomer.
Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, was named best dance act. For his acceptance speech he held up a piece of paper with the word "Speechless" on it.
Jubilee 2000, the campaign to end Third World debt, got a boost when it was awarded the Freddie Mercury award.
Accepting it, U2's Bono said: "They don't want our money, we don't have to spend a thing. We just have to stop asking starving people to give back the money our governments loaned them plus interest."
He then introduced boxing legend Muhammad Ali who got the biggest cheer of the night. The show included performances from Boyzone, an Abba medley from Steps, B*witched, Cleopatra and Billie and Whitney Houston. The ceremony will be shown on UTV tonight at 8pm.
