Over 400 guests turned out today for the marriage of singer Andrea Corr and her husband Brett Desmond, son of the billionaire financier Dermot Desmond, in Co Clare.

The wedding, which has been billed as one of Irish society’s weddings of the decade attracted luminaries from the world of music and sport to Saint Joseph’s Church Miltown Malbay.

Hundreds of locals ringed the picturesque hilltop church overlooking the Atlantic to catch a glimpse of the wedding party and guests as they arrived.

A fleet of white buses brought the early guests from the Doonbeg Golf and Spa resort where the reception will take place this evening.

Among them were the golfer Padraig Harrington and his wife Caroline, former Celtic managers Gordon Strachan and Martin O’Neill – Dermot Desmond is a major shareholder in Celtic – the comedian Patrick Kielty and MCD promoter Denis Desmond and his wife Caroline. Later businessman John Magnier arrived along with JP McManus and his wife Pat.

The father of the groom arrived with his wife 20 minutes before the ceremony was due to start and posed for photographs at the church gate.

U2 lead singer Bono and his wife Ali turned up in a black Maserati at 2.35pm, five minutes after the scheduled start of the wedding.

However, the biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the bride who arrived at the church wearing a white strapless Vera Wang dress. She was greeted by her older sister Sharon who along with the other two bridesmaids, Caroline Corr and Zoe Desmond – sister of the groom – wore slate-grey bridesmaids' dresses.

The reception will take place a 10 minute drive away at Doonbeg Golf and Spa resort later this evening.
