MR Ennis William Cosby, the only son of the entertainer, Bill Cosby, was buried at his family's Massachusetts estate in a small private funeral yesterday, three days after he was killed by an unidentified gunman.

Mr Cosby's agent, Mr Norman Brokaw, said in a statement that the famed comedian, his wife, his four daughters and Mr Ennis Cosby's friend, Mr Phil Caputo, and a companion were the only mourners at a ceremony in Shelbourne Falls, Massachusetts.

Mr Ennis Cosby (27), a Columbia University graduate student, was gunned down early on Thursday while changing a flat tire on a darkened roadside along a southern California freeway. He died of a single, gunshot wound to the head.

Police have mounted a massive search but have so far failed to capture the killer. Authorities believe robbery was the motive.

Investigators were flooded with calls yesterday from people claiming to know something about the suspect after he was shown in a composite sketch based on the description given by a witness.

The Cosby family's tragedy has resonated across a nation that has embraced the comedian as the symbol of the all American dad. Mr Cosby's only son was the inspiration for some of his father's most poignant television humour.

At the family's request, Mr Cosby's body was released on Saturday from the Los Angeles County morgue following an autopsy. It was then secretly flown to western Massachusetts.

In Los Angeles, detectives were working around the clock to follow up on new leads which started pouring in after a drawing of a white man with a menacing stare appeared on local news broadcasts.

While admitting that investigators have "no real suspect at this point", a police spokesman said detectives hope the sketch of the killer - along with a drawing of a possible second witness - will lead to a breakthrough.
