Louth County Council has asked the National Roads Authority (NRA) to reduce the speed limit on a section of the main Dublin-Belfast road between Dundalk and Newry.

Two people have died this year along the eight-mile stretch between the outskirts of Dundalk at Ballymascanlon roundabout and the Border.

The family of one victim, 18-year-old Ms Caroline White, from Ravensdale, Dundalk, has been campaigning for better road safety before the Border, at Carrickarnon, since she was killed in a hit-and-run after leaving a hotel disco.

The driver of the car escaped, and no one has been charged with her death.

Her family has appealed to councillors, gardai, the NRA and the owners of the hotel to support improved safety measures.

Ms White had left Lacey's disco in the early hours of January 22nd and was crossing the road with a friend when a Northern-registered car hit them. She died from her injuries. Her friend, Ms Fiona Oliver, also from Ravensdale, is still greatly traumatised.

The disco is part of a hotel complex occupying two sides of the road and linked by a pedestrian subway. There are car-parks on both sides, and after the weekly disco taxis, minibuses and cars gather for the departing crowds.

"This is basically a hotel with a main road running through it," said Ms White's aunt, Ms Anne Doherty-White.

The NRA has confirmed it received a letter on the issue from Louth County Council, and a reply is expected later in the week.
