A Limerick City Council motion to blacklist Aer Lingus over its decision to cut the Shannon-to-Heathrow service was withdrawn at an emergency meeting last night.

All members, except Fine Gael representatives, voted against a boycott.

Fine Gael councillor Diarmuid Scully had called on his colleagues not to use Air Lingus flights or services for official business.

Mr Scully was later forced to withdraw his motion, but he said he may table it again if he is not happy with the Government's response after tomorrow's Cabinet meeting.

"We're in a fight not just with Aer Lingus, I believe we're in a fight with the Government, as I believe the Government is prepared to use its vote to close the Shannon Heathrow service," he said.

A compromise motion calling on Aer Lingus to reverse its decision to cancel the Heathrow service and urging the Government to use its 25 per cent shareholding to maintain the service was agreed instead.
