Domestic waste skips placed by Fermanagh District Council for residents in Belleek are due to be relocated and manned because of illegal dumping by people not from the town.

The council is also "actively pursuing" two businesses in Ballyshannon who have been illegally dumping waste into the Belleek skips.

A spokesman for Fermanagh District Council said roughly 40 per cent of the waste going into the four skips was coming from the southern side of the Border.

"We have had a camera on the site in Belleek for some time looking at the operation. We are aware there are many people from the South using the site but we are most concerned about traders from the Ballyshannon area using the skips to dispose of rubbish," he said.

"We have written to two traders in the Republic, around the Ballyshannon area, who we have detected dumping there. We are actively pursuing these people for significant illegal use of the facility," he said.

The spokesman said a number of letters had been written to householders on the southern side of the Border for illegal use of the skips. "We have been building up a database of all these offenders; when we take cases to court we hope to be able to secure convictions," he said.

The council spokesman also identified skips in Irvinestown, Garrison and Roslea as being stuffed with rubbish from the South.
