DUN Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has announced plans for a 2.9km cycleway running from Sandyford to Milltown in Dublin, beside the proposed Luas light rail line.

The cycleway is to be built alongside the Luas track, from the Balally terminus to the Nine Arches Viaduct, and will be separated from the road network.

Four main access points are proposed along the route at Balally station; Dundrum station; Windy Arbour station; and the southern end of the viaduct at St Columbanus Road. It is expected that cyclists will also be able to join the route on Churchtown Road, near Taney Bridge.

Lighting will be provided along the cycleway.

The Luas track will be generally separated from the cycleway by a combination of kerbs and bollards. At certain points, however, such as near bridges, a more continuous physical barrier or fence may be built.

"Pedestrian priority" measures will also be introduced to avoid potential conflict.

The cycleway will run as two separate tracks between Sandyford and Dundrum, becoming a single track after Taney Bridge up to Milltown. It will continue from there to the city centre, as detailed in plans issued by Dublin Corporation last month.
