Kerry County Council wants Iarnród Éireann to introduce carriages free of mobile phones on long-distance journeys. However, Iarnród Éireann has no plans to introduce such carriages, a spokesman said yesterday, despite a unanimous resolution by Kerry council.
Councillors spoke of passengers being disturbed on train journeys by fellow travellers constantly using mobiles.
Travel was still a "peaceful and leisurely activity" for some and people had a right not to be disturbed by mobile phone chatter, Michael Gleeson, South Kerry Independent Alliance, said.
He had witnessed a passenger who spent "the entire journey" between Dublin and Killarney making and taking calls. "One carriage in each long-distance train should be mobile phone free," he said.
However Barry Kenny of Iarnród Éireann said it was not a huge issue at the moment.
