Dublin City Cllr Killian Forde, who has resigned from Sinn Féin, has complained of interference in local decisions from the party’s national office.
Mr Forde said he had become increasingly concerned with the direction of the party over the past three years. “There was constant interference from the national office in local decisions,” he said.
Dublin Sinn Féin chairman Eoin Ó Broin called on Mr Forde to “do the honourable thing” and resign his council seat to allow for a Sinn Féin co-option.
“Sinn Féin is an activist, campaigning party that puts policies before personalities. It is not a platform for careerist politicians,” he said.
“Killian Forde clearly has problems with this position and with the politics of Sinn Féin. It has become increasingly obvious he is in the wrong political party.”
