A row over the rezoning of lands, including two golf courses, in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area has forced the county manager to report the council to the Minister for Environment for failure to fulfil its legal obligations.
The council has voted against the rezoning of 68 hectares of land for residential use. The bulk of the land was made up of two golf courses, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Golf Club and Stepaside Golf Course. Between them, the courses would yield enough land for up to 2,000 houses out of a total 19,000 required to meet the county's needs to 2010.
Following a council meeting on Monday night, the councillors voted to adopt a draft development plan which would exclude the lands occupied by the courses.
However, the county manager, Mr Derek Brady, insisted that, without the 68 hectares, the development plan was invalid as it would not provide for the county's housing needs.
