Indonesian police hunting those responsible for last week's deadly bombing at the Australian embassy in Jakarta say they have detained a married couple suspected of links to militants behind the attack.

Police identified the detained couple as a man named Rahmatullah and his wife, arrested during a Wednesday night raid on a house on the outskirts of Surabaya, the capital of East Java province.

They have not said if the pair were suspected of involvement in the embassy bombing, which killed nine people and wounded 182. Radio reports said the pair were caught throwing documents written in Arabic down a well at the time of the raid.

A police spokesman in East Java, said three other men suspected of links to Jemaah Islamiah, a militant group blamed for the attack and seen as the regional arm of al-Qaeda, managed to flee when police turned up.

Police have named Azahari Husin, a Malaysian bombmaking expert in Jemaah Islamiah, as their prime suspect in the embassy attack. Police have offered a reward to anyone with information leading to his arrest.

Indonesia has blamed Jemaah Islamiah for other attacks, including the 2002 bombing of nightclubs on Bali island that killed 202 people. Jemaah Islamiah wants to set up an austere Islamic state across parts of Southeast Asia.
