A English couple who suffered a vicious hatchet attack are in a stable condition in hospital today.
The woman (56) and her husband (61), from Skegness, Lincolnshire, were asleep in their camper van in north Co Louth yesterday morning when the gang struck.
The woman suffered a fractured skull, and her husband a broken arm. Both also sustained cuts to their heads in the 4am attack.
The gang escaped in the camper van, but police later found on fire across the Border, and two men (21) were arrested by the PSNI nearby. They remain in custody today.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) said today the two victims were in a stable condition in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
It is believed the couple had arrived in Northern Ireland on the ferry on Sunday evening and parked before midnight close to Carrickarnan on the main N1 Dublin to Belfast road, north of Dundalk.
